Identity confirmation

Identity confirmation in New Zealand: corroborating a person across independent records

Confirming that a person is who they appear to be is a corroboration exercise. It is done by finding agreement between records that were created independently of each other.

The problem this answers

Acting against the wrong person is the most expensive mistake on a file. It wastes the enforcement step, and it creates a privacy problem of your own making.

Common names, shared addresses and stale records make near matches look like matches, and a single confirming record is exactly the evidence that leads people astray.

What the search returns

  • Records held against the subject across credit-linked, directory, company and property sources, so agreement between them can be assessed.
  • Address history and dates, which is usually what separates two people with the same name.
  • Company officer and shareholding records where the subject appears on them.
  • Contact points and digital footprint signals that support or contradict the record position.
  • Conflicts left visible, with each record carrying its source and date rather than being resolved into a single confident answer.

When it is used

  • Before enforcement or service, to confirm you have the right person at the right address.
  • In claims and fraud work, where the identity presented on a file needs testing.
  • In onboarding and counterparty checks, as part of a wider due diligence process.
  • On any file where two candidates share a name and one of them is about to be acted against.

What it does not establish

  • This is not an identity verification product and it is not a KYC or electronic identity verification service. It does not verify a document, and it does not produce a pass or fail.
  • It does not confirm that a document presented to you is genuine.
  • It does not certify identity for any statutory purpose. Where a regulated verification standard applies, use a service designed for it.
  • Agreement between records raises confidence. It does not remove the judgment.

The limits on the enquiry

  • Credit reporting information is used only where the Credit Reporting Privacy Code 2020 permits access for the declared purpose.
  • Collection is limited to what the purpose requires, and the enquiry is not widened because more was available.
  • Every search records the user, the time and the declared authorised purpose.

The statutory position is set out in full on the compliance page.

Who may access it

  • Verified account holders with a declarable authorised purpose.

How intelID consolidates the result

Independent record sets are returned together and matched to one subject, which is what makes corroboration a reading exercise rather than a reconciliation exercise.

The audit record shows what was checked and when, which is the evidence that the confirmation step was actually taken.

What you pay is the monthly subscription plus the searches you run, set out on the pricing page. Every integrated source and its legal basis is listed on the data sources page.

Questions about identity confirmation

Is this a KYC or electronic identity verification service?

No. intelID corroborates a person across independent licensed records. It does not verify identity documents and does not produce a regulated verification outcome.

How many sources should agree before I act?

There is no fixed number. The practical test is whether independent records agree, whether the dates are recent, and whether anything material conflicts. Conflicts are returned rather than smoothed over.

Does the search collect more than I need?

No. Collection is scoped to the declared purpose. Information that is available but not relevant to that purpose is not gathered because it happened to be reachable.
