Credit bureau data

Credit bureau address search in New Zealand: Equifax and Centrix data, used lawfully

Credit reporting data holds the most recently confirmed address for a large share of the adult population. It is also the most tightly controlled source intelID carries.

Why credit files hold the strongest address record

A credit file is updated whenever a person applies for finance, opens an account or has a default recorded against them. Each of those events carries an address that the person supplied and that a credit provider had reason to check. That makes credit reporting data the closest thing New Zealand has to a maintained record of where people actually live, and it is why a trace that starts anywhere else usually ends up here.

intelID queries Equifax and Centrix under licence. The result returned to you is the bureau's own current position at the moment the search runs, consolidated into the same format as every other source in the enquiry rather than delivered as a separate export you have to read on its own terms.

The access rules that apply, and how they are enforced

Credit reporting data is not a public register. It sits under the Credit Reporting Privacy Code 2020, which limits who may access it and the purposes for which it may be accessed. Holding an intelID account does not by itself give you credit bureau access. The role assigned to your user determines whether the source is available, and the purpose you declare at the point of search determines whether the query runs.

Every credit query is written to the audit log against the user who ran it, the time it ran and the purpose declared for it. If a data provider audits access to its data, or a subject complains, the record of why the search was run exists and can be produced. That record is the reason a compliance review of an intelID enquiry takes minutes rather than a reconstruction from memory.

Individual and commercial credit checks

Alongside the tracing and identity data, intelID offers full credit reports from Centrix and Equifax in two forms. An individual credit check returns the full personal report: the credit score, credit history and account conduct, defaults, judgments, insolvency events, enquiry history, and the addresses and contact details held on file. A commercial credit check returns the full business report: the company credit score and rating, payment behaviour, defaults and judgments, registered security interests, insolvency and adverse events, and the directors and shareholders behind the entity.

A full credit report on a person is supplied only with that person's consent, or where the Credit Reporting Privacy Code 2020 permits access without consent, such as recovery of a debt the person already owes you. You declare the basis before the search runs, intelID records it against the query, and the credit reporter logs the access at their end as well. A report obtained for one declared purpose may not be used for another.

Both checks are live and are selected search by search, so you run one only when your declared purpose calls for it. Access depends on the role assigned to your user and the basis you declare at the point of search.

What a credit bureau search returns

  • Address records held on file, including previously recorded addresses where the bureau holds them.
  • Contact details recorded against the file, used to confirm a person is reachable.
  • Identity particulars that let you corroborate a match against a second record.
  • The date the source last recorded the information, so you can judge how current it is.
  • The full individual credit report, including score, defaults, judgments and enquiry history.
  • The full commercial credit report, including company credit score and rating, payment behaviour and adverse events.

How it fits the rest of the enquiry

In practice a credit bureau result is the anchor of a locate. It gives you a dated address to test, and the rest of the enquiry corroborates it: a title record confirming ownership or occupancy, a company record placing the person at a registered office, a digital footprint result confirming the person is still contactable on the number you hold.

This source is queried as part of a consolidated skip tracing enquiry, on the same authorised-purpose declaration and the same audit record as every other source. There is no separate account, no separate invoice and no minimum spend against it. What you pay is the monthly subscription plus the searches you run, set out on the pricing page.

Questions about credit bureau data

Who can run a credit bureau address search in New Zealand?

Only a permitted user acting for a permitted purpose under the Credit Reporting Privacy Code 2020. Within intelID that means a verified user whose role includes credit access and who declares an authorised purpose before the search runs.

Does a search of this kind affect the subject's credit score?

No. Locating and identity enquiries of the type intelID supports are not credit applications and are not treated as such by the bureaus.

Can I run a full individual credit check?

Individual credit checks are available through Centrix and Equifax. The full report is supplied only with the subject's consent, or where the Credit Reporting Privacy Code 2020 permits access without it, such as recovery of an existing debt. The basis you declare is recorded against the query.

Can I run a commercial credit check on a business?

Commercial credit checks are available through the same two providers. The report covers the company credit score and rating, payment behaviour, defaults and judgments, security interests, insolvency and adverse events, and the people behind the entity. Where it includes information about an individual, the Credit Reporting Privacy Code 2020 applies to that part of it.

Do you query both Equifax and Centrix?

Both are integrated. The two bureaus do not hold identical records, so a file that is thin at one can be current at the other, and the consolidated result shows what each returned.

Is the credit data stored by intelID?

The source is queried at the time of the search rather than warehoused. Subject data is not used for marketing, is not resold and is not exposed to public indexing.
