Digital footprint

Social media and digital footprint tracing in New Zealand, from a single identifier

A phone number or an email address is often the last live identifier on a stale file. Digital footprint tracing turns that identifier into an identified, contactable person.

What the trace works from, and what it reaches

The input is an identifier: a mobile number, an email address, a username or a profile. The output is the set of publicly visible accounts, listings, registrations and platform signals that identifier connects to, and the other identifiers those connect to in turn. Threads that converge on the same person are the result. Threads that do not converge are discarded rather than reported as a match.

The material reached is information the subject or a platform has made publicly visible. It does not extend behind a login the subject controls, it does not involve pretext accounts or contact with the subject, and it does not involve circumventing an access control or a platform's terms of use.

Fair collection, and why the purpose carries the search

Public visibility is not on its own a licence to collect. Collection has to be for a lawful purpose connected with your functions, and by means that are fair and not unreasonably intrusive. The declared purpose you record before the search is what carries it, and the audit log is what evidences it afterwards.

Relevance is the practical limit. Health information, family circumstances, affiliations and images of third parties are almost never needed to locate a person or assess a recovery, and collecting them because they happened to be visible is not the same as needing them. A disciplined trace records what answers the question and stops there.

What a digital footprint search returns

  • Social media profiles and business pages associated with the identifier searched.
  • Linked phone numbers, email addresses and usernames that resolve to the same person.
  • Platform registrations and listings that show the identifier is in current use.
  • Locality and contact signals that corroborate or contradict a recorded address.

How it fits the rest of the enquiry

Digital footprint results are strongest as corroboration. A distinctive username reused across three platforms, sitting alongside a credit file address and a title record for the same locality, is a defensible match. The same result on its own is a lead, and should be treated as one until a second dated record agrees.

This source is queried as part of a consolidated skip tracing enquiry, on the same authorised-purpose declaration and the same audit record as every other source. There is no separate account, no separate invoice and no minimum spend against it. What you pay is the monthly subscription plus the searches you run, set out on the pricing page.

Questions about digital footprint

Can you trace a person from a phone number in New Zealand?

Often, yes. A number that has been used to register accounts, list a trade or verify a service tends to resolve to a name and a set of linked accounts. It is corroboration rather than proof, and should be tested against a dated record.

Is social media tracing legal here?

Viewing publicly visible information is lawful collection where it is done for a lawful purpose connected with your functions and by fair means. The purpose is what makes it lawful, not the fact that the information was reachable.

Do you use fake profiles or contact the subject?

No. There is no pretexting, no request for access from the subject and no circumvention of a login or a platform's terms of use.

How is the search recorded?

Like every other query on the platform: the identifier searched, the user, the time and the declared authorised purpose are written to the audit log.
